Mesa and the Trumpet player…
“Malhuer”, after Choate, 12×16 oil on canvas, by Rog Lyngaas, 29sep08, using Choate7 non-toxic palette.
West of Boise, is another place, perhaps another planet — Malhuer County of Oregon. There are some grand vistas in this high desert county. Many cows, and a lot more Antelope; traverse its terrain. Like Owyhee county, of Idaho, but not as remote; it has some nice mesa type hills. A famous trumpet player grew up in this desolate place. Perhaps he received his great lungs from playing from atop of a mesa; trying for “echo from heaven”. Some believe, subconsciously, that an echo is from heaven — it is God giving you some feedback. Regardless, this famous trumpet player is Doc Severinsen.
The painting above is a study of a future mural that my mentor, Fred Choate, is proposing for a client. Of course, his final version will be totally different in style. Perhaps you get the idea of the grandiosity of Malhuer County by seeing this painting. Enjoy, and may you too have the lungs to traverse the canyon, and get feedback from God.
